#15 Boise State Outpaces San Diego State with Maddux Madsen’s Career Day

The 15th-seeded Boise State Broncos improved to 7-1 on Friday night and are off to their best start since the 2019 season. Spencer Danielson’s team earned a 56-24 victory over the San Diego State Aztecs.

It was a solid enough performance for Broncos star running back Ashton Jeanty; Ashton Jeanty finished with 31 carries for 149 yards and two touchdowns along with two catches for 31 yards.

But what really stood out in Boise State’s win was the play of quarterback Maddux Madsen. Madsen finished with career highs in completions (24), passing yards (307) and touchdown passes (4). Madsen led the offensive performance for the Broncos, which resulted in 541 total yards. BSU also excelled seven-on-seven in their red zone trip, moving them one step closer to another Mountain West title and the College Football Playoff.

On Boise State’s first possession of the game, the Broncos marched down the field and moved the ball 66 yards in eight plays. The drive ended with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Madsen to Latrell Caples. Caples added his second touchdown of the day on Boise State’s second possession, catching a 19-yard reception in the end zone as the SDSU defense faked a snap on Jeanty.

The Broncos began their offense at that point when Broncos linebacker A’Marion McCoy picked off SDSU’s Danny O’Neil and returned it 35 yards to the end zone.

The Broncos had success again on SDSU’s next possession to end the first quarter. This time it was Alex Teubner at the Boise State 42-yard line. This drive also resulted in Madsen scoring a third touchdown pass, this time to Prince Strachan from 14 yards out.

The Aztecs actually gained some momentum in the second quarter. SDSU got on the board on the fifth possession when Jordan Napier’s 40-yard reception led to a 27-yard field goal. Then, after forcing a Boise State punt, Marquez Cooper ran 42 yards to get into the red zone, then followed that up with a six-yard touchdown run.

In the final minute of the first half, Madsen and Caples connected on a play-action call once again, this time from 14 yards out, giving Boise State the lead before intermission.

Caples would finish the game with six catches for 90 yards and three touchdowns; all of which were career highs.

To begin the second half, Jeanty finally started the running game, gaining 54 yards and a touchdown on Boise State’s first possession.

The teams exchanged punts for the remainder of the third quarter. Later in the fourth quarter, Ashton Jeanty struck again, reaching the end zone on a short speed option at the end of a 13-play, 90-yard drive.

Napier came up big once again as SDSU got a comeback with 7:35 left. This time it was a 30-yard grab in traffic in the end zone.

Madsen’s day ended there as USC transfer Malachi Nelson entered the game at quarterback. The same thing happened at other points for the Broncos at that point. Nelson and running back Tyler Crowe mounted an eight-play, 75-yard touchdown drive as an exclamation point. Crowe capped it off with a two-yard run.

SDSU added another score in the final 30 seconds with a long touchdown pass from O’Neil to Mekhi Shaw to make the final 56-24.

Boise State will continue its home game next week and will host Nevada on Saturday, November 9th. The start time has not yet been announced.

San Diego State, meanwhile, fell to 3-5 on the season and suffered its first conference loss of the season. They have another Friday game next week and will host New Mexico at 7:30pm PT on FS1.
