New England Patriots Open Doors for Rookie WR to Shine

New England Patriots They entered last season with a clear need for a wide receiver, but were forced to turn to the draft after emerging prominent in free agency and trades.

They selected Ja’Lynn Polk early in the second round and took Javon Baker a few rounds later.

Many expected Baker to play a pretty significant role in the Patriots’ offense in 2024, but instead he was barely visible.

But this may be about to change.

New England head coach Jerod Mayo told reporters Friday that he envisions a larger role for Baker moving forward.

“He’s had great training the last few weeks.” Mayo saidVia the Pats’ official YouTube account. “Hopefully he gets the opportunity to play receiver a little bit now. He’s an explosive player. We need to see that on Sunday.”

The Patriots deployed Baker in a running back role against the New York Jets last week, but Mayo I was disappointed with the results.because the first-year quarterback only returned one hit.

As a receiver, Baker wasn’t targeted once all season, which is pretty concerning considering how weak New England’s receiving corps is.

The 22-year-old had a stellar 2023 season in Central Florida; He recorded 52 receptions for 1,139 yards and seven touchdowns. He showed off his explosiveness, averaging 21.9 yards per catch.

Maybe Baker can emerge as a legitimate threat in the Pats’ offense this Sunday.

The Patriots don’t have a true No. 1 receiver right now, with DeMario Douglas filling that role. Kendrick Bourne, meanwhile, has recorded just four catches in four games and both K. J. Osborn And Tyquan Thornton They look like trade candidates.

New England is 2-6 and will face the Tennessee Titans in Week 9.
