On Sept. 21, contractors began repairing 4.8 miles of damaged guardrails, rebuilding burned pavement and signs, removing rocks and debris, and replacing drainage systems.

The $9.8 million emergency project is expected to be completed in early December, with the road reopening the week of Dec. 9, according to a Caltrans news release.

“Crews are making significant progress completing safety repairs,” Caltrans spokesman Eric Dionne said.

He added that when the road reopens for the first time, it will be in one direction only. Dionne said officials don’t know how long this arrangement will last.

Big Bear Lake City officials recommend travelers from the south use Highway 38 from Redlands, and travelers from the north use Highway 18 from the Lucerne Valley to reach the area.

Officials said 330 will remain closed until crews determine it is safe, but businesses are not affected.

“This situation has not impacted tourism at Big Bear Lake,” said Visit Big Bear CEO Travis Scott. “Above all, this is only a minor inconvenience for visitors who are used to going up and down the mountain using this route.”

California Highway Patrol office assistant Leslie Padilla said parts of the 18 freeway are a bit congested because of the 330 closure.

Scott said December through March are the busiest months for tourists to visit Big Bear.

“Now that we see snow, we will see this effect magnified,” he said.

“As a tourism city, even though our roads may be closed, we are open as a community and welcome our guests with open arms,” Scott said.
