Obama attended Harvard Law School before becoming the 44th president.

Obama began his political career in 1996 when he was elected to the Illinois State Senate.

He ran for the US House of Representatives in 2000 but lost to the incumbent president.

Obama was elected to the US Senate in 2004. That same year, he gave the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention, leading some political pundits to say he had the makings of a future president.

Three years later, Obama took a big step and announced his candidacy for president.

In 2008, Obama secured the Democratic nomination and won the general election, defeating Arizona Senator John McCain.

Barack Obama later became the 44th President of the United States.

In his first month in office, President Obama signed a fair pay law for women and a bill that will revive the economy struggling with the Great Recession.

Obama also won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 for his efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation.

In 2010, President Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, known as “Obamacare.” The law has proven to be one of the most comprehensive reforms to the healthcare system in the last half century.

In foreign policy, the War on Terror continued in Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2011, President Obama led the Navy SEAL mission that resulted in the death of 9/11 mastermind Osama Bin Laden; This was a major milestone in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

In 2012, Obama won re-election against Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney; but by a smaller margin than four years ago.

In his second term, Obama sought to repair relations with Cuba and expand trade partnerships in the Pacific.

President Obama also attempted to negotiate an agreement with Iran to limit Iran’s development of nuclear technology, particularly to prevent the acquisition of atomic weapons.

In his last year in office, he signed the Paris Agreement, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to combat climate change.

As Obama prepared to leave office, he met with President-elect Donald Trump to ensure a smooth transition of power.
