Aberdeen Coats for Kids Drive celebrates 20 years

ABERDEEN, SD (Dakota News Now) – As temperatures begin to drop as winter approaches, many charities are turning their attention to providing aid to less fortunate households.

For the 20th year in a row, a church in Aberdeen is stepping into this breach with its Coats for Kids program.

In a nod to Coats for Kids programs across the country, North Highland United Methodist Church is setting an example in its own efforts in the Aberdeen community.

Pastor Andrea Johnson expressed her appreciation for the overall support from the community.

“The community seems to be really supportive. It continues. This is something they look forward to. We’re getting calls asking ‘When will it happen?’ When is your distribution? When will the boxes come out?’” Johnson said. “So it’s one of those things that just keeps going. “I think the real challenge comes when we distribute on Saturday morning, making sure there’s enough supplies for everyone who comes in and needs it.”

If you want to donate, you can always do so at the church, but there are other ways to contribute.

“There are many different ways you can donate. There are boxes all over the city. There are posters and different boxes all over the city. Boxes in different stores and locations. You can also scan the QR code on the posters and donate financially so we can go out and buy coats. So there are many ways to do this,” Johnson said.

Church member Ruth Webb, who has volunteered throughout the program’s 20-year history, explained what happens to the donations.

“We have other volunteers that come in and inspect each jacket, glove, snow pants and make sure there are no rips, broken zippers, missing buttons,” Webb said.

Every needed item is repaired.

“Then I go in and grab a bunch of dirty jackets, take them home, do the actual laundry and bring it here,” Webb said.

It’s not too late to contribute to the Coats for Kids campaign Northern Highland United Methodist Church. Donations are accepted until Friday, with a drawing to be held on Saturday.
