Authorities are still waiting to determine the identity of a female found dead near the Millcreek Mall last week as efforts are being made to match any reported missing persons to the discovery.

The Millcreek Township Police Department on Tuesday released updated information on the body, which Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook said earlier this week is a female.

Based on information gleaned during an autopsy on the woman on Friday, according to Millcreek police, the female was 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighed about 168 pounds. She had no signs of scars, marks or tattoos, and no sign of traumatic injury, police reported.

Cook on Monday said no evidence was found during the autopsy indicating the woman had been shot or stabbed. The cause of her death was still unknown Wednesday.

Millcreek police additionally reported the female had previous professional medical care that included at least three surgeries.

The female was found at about 10:30 am on Oct. 24 in a narrow stretch of Walnut Creek behind Elevate Church on Millcreek Mall property in Millcreek Township. The discovery was made by a fisherman who said he was scouting the waterway for steelhead.

Cook said the female was likely dead four to six months. There was no clothing on the body, which he said could indicate the body was caught up in some brush for an extended period of time.

Mercyhurst University’s department of applied forensic sciences is examining the remains as part of the ongoing investigation, the coroner said.

Checking missing persons cases, homeless population

Millcreek police said investigators reached out to the Erie Bureau of Police and the Pennsylvania State Police to see if they had any open missing persons cases involving females that might be connected to the discovery, but found no cases. Police said they also released information on the discovery nationally to see if any other missing persons cases might be connected to the Millcreek incident.

Police said they have additionally made inquiries among the region’s homeless population.
