Lincoln Police say woman stole more than $130,000 from child benefits and used the money to gamble

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Lincoln Police arrested a woman who reportedly stole more than $130,000 from children’s benefits and used the money to gamble.

According to LPD, police received information that the 41-year-old woman stole the benefits her children received after their father’s death.

The three children were using their father’s life insurance and retirement benefits. Because the beneficiaries were minors, the insurance company requested that the woman be appointed as the court-appointed guardian.

The court ordered that each guardian’s account be restricted and that the woman would not have the ability to withdraw money without a court order.

On Aug. 14, the Lancaster County Probate Court requested an accounting of the children’s financial accounts, but it was not provided by their executors. Financial records revealed the minors’ custodial accounts had less than $3.

Between December 23, 2023, and April 30, the woman transferred approximately $132,843.46 from the children’s accounts to her personal bank account, all without authorization by the Lancaster County Probate Court. Approximately $58,339.70 was spent at casinos.

The woman was arrested for illegally taking more than $5,000. The next hearing date is scheduled for October 29.
