Family members of fallen LAPD officers call city council candidate Ysabel Jurado’s “cop” comment a “slap in the face”

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Family members of dead LAPD officers gathered Sunday to condemn the actions of city council candidate Ysabel Jurado, who was heard saying “F-cop” at a recent meeting.

A leaked audio recording of Jurado, who is running against incumbent Kevin de León for the 14th District seat, quoting lyrics from West Coast hip-hop group NWA’s song “F- Tha Police” during a meeting with students at Cal State Los Angeles has been leaked.

Jurado was asked about abolishing the police.

Jurado responded, “What’s a rap verse? F-cop, that’s how I see ’em.”

On Sunday, several widows, family members and girlfriends of fallen Los Angeles Police Department officers spoke out about their pain, anger and disappointment after hearing Jurado’s words.

Describing Jurado’s words as a “slap in the face”, Angela Mendoza said, “It is dangerous for someone who wants to serve on the city council to say these words.”

Mendoza’s boyfriend, LAPD Ofc. Fernando Arroyos was shot and killed while the two were house shopping. Arroyos was off-duty at the time, but said the attackers opened fire after seeing his police ID.

Jurado released a statement Sunday saying voters were looking for someone who would take a “new approach to public safety.”

“I understand the pain families feel following the loss of a loved one and have deep respect for anyone who has lost someone in the line of duty,” he said. “We can honor the memories of fallen police officers while pushing for accountability and equity in policing and real investments in our communities.

What I’m hearing from voters is a desire for new leaders who will take a new approach to public safety; Because what we’re doing clearly isn’t working. “That’s what we’re focused on, and we won’t give in to attempts to throw us off course.”

Last week, Eyewitness News learned it was a Cal State Los Angeles student who asked Jurado about policing work in De León’s city council office.

It is unclear whether this student was the person who recorded Jurado’s answer to the question.

In 2022, De León found himself in a stalemate. different leaked audio scandalThe incident included racist remarks and resulted in the resignation of City Council President Nury Martinez. De León resisted calls to resign.

He accused Jurado of being an abolitionist of the police.

De León weighed in on the issue last week, saying he “supports our men and women in blue who protect us every day, especially in neighborhoods where people want more police presence.”

“This is not a reflection of the values of who we are in the city of Los Angeles.”

“The police budget is one of the largest budgets in the entire city of Los Angeles, so you have to engage with them. If you come across as completely hostile to a legislative body like the city council and want to abolish them, then what does that say about the public safety of ordinary people in Los Angeles?” “

Over the weekend, nearly two dozen residents from neighborhoods in the 14th District gathered outside Jurado’s home in Highland Park and demanded an apology for his remarks.

The last day of voting in the race is November 5.
