ST. LUCIE COUNTY — A 56-year-old man described as an experienced surfer died Saturday after paddling in the ocean in the north pier area of Hutchinson Island, Sheriff Keith Pearson said Monday.

Thomas Reschak was taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce but died, Pearson said.

“Another surfer found him, watched him paddle out, and found him unconscious a few minutes later,” Pearson said.

Sheriff’s officials were told Reschak was an experienced surfer, Pearson said. He said other surfers were also there at the time.

“His surfer friends immediately brought him to shore and started CPR,” Pearson said. “They last saw him paddling through the breach and when they arrived they found him unconscious.”

Pearson said nothing appeared suspicious and an autopsy was performed.

“Everyone there said he was a lifelong surfer, so… it sounds like he had a medical issue while he was in the water,” Pearson said.

No other information was immediately available.
